North Sentinel Island lies in the Bay of Bengal and it is home to the last “uncontacted” tribe of people on Earth. I wrote in detail about this strange location for a post on Eternal Idol in 2011, after which I was contacted by Captain Robert Fore, the gentleman pictured above, who narrates the brief video.
I was delighted to be contacted by Captain Fore for a number of reasons, just one being that, as the undisputed hero of North Sentinel Island, he was responsible for rescuing the otherwise doomed crew of a freighter that had run aground just off the island in the early 1980s. He briefly relates some details of this event that made global news at the time in the video, and he does so with what I’ve come to realise is his typical well-spoken modesty. He and I have further spoken at great length about his unique connection with North Sentinel Island, and with the people who live there in seclusion from the rest of the world.
In the course of the video, Captain Fore mentions the long-defunct Mindscape magazine, in which my interview with him initially appeared. From the start, I regarded it as one of the great honours of my life to be in touch with this great man, then my joy knew few bounds when he travelled to Britain a few years later to meet me.
